The next day Moses said to the people,“You have committed a very serious sin, but now I will go up to the LORD– perhaps I can make atonement on behalf of your sin.”

His advisers said to him,“Look, we have heard that the kings of the Israelite dynasty are kind. Allow us to put sackcloth around our waists and ropes on our heads and surrender to the king of Israel. Maybe he will spare our lives.”

The LORD saw Israel’s intense suffering; everyone was weak and incapacitated and Israel had no deliverer.

Perhaps the LORD your God will hear all these things the chief adviser has spoken on behalf of his master, the king of Assyria, who sent him to taunt the living God. When the LORD your God hears, perhaps he will punish him for the things he has said. So pray for this remnant that remains.’”

Turn away from evil and do what is right! Strive for peace and promote it!

Turn away from evil! Do what is right! Then you will enjoy lasting security.

You who love the LORD, hate evil! He protects the lives of his faithful followers; he delivers them from the power of the wicked.

O LORD, do I not hate those who hate you, and despise those who oppose you?

But if that nation I threatened stops doing wrong, I will cancel the destruction I intended to do to it.

Moreover, the LORD says,“Sing for joy for the descendants of Jacob. Utter glad shouts for that foremost of the nations. Make your praises heard. Then say,‘LORD, rescue your people. Deliver those of Israel who remain alive.’

Who knows? Perhaps he will be compassionate and grant a reprieve, and leave blessing in his wake– a meal offering and a drink offering for you to offer to the LORD your God!
