Story
He was called "the Rythian" because he lived in the region of Raithou, the city of al-Tur in Sinai.
He was an Egyptian monk found in the region of Canopus (Abu Qir) in the early fourth century. When the persecution of Valens arose, he was exiled to Palestine, and from there he returned to the wilderness of Sinai. He himself witnessed the raid of the pagan Arabs upon the monasteries of Sinai, in which they laid waste all the monasteries and scattered the monks. So Amon set out for Raithou, which was a center for the monks of Sinai. He lived there for a long while, until a raid fell upon Raithou; then he left it and went to Memphis, and from there to Scetis, to live among its ascetics as a disciple under Abba Poemen.
It is said that he asked his father Abba Poemen about evil thoughts, and he answered him that it lies within the enemy's power to drive them against us, and it lies within our power not to accept them
