Story
This saint was a man virtuous and perfect in his generation, so they chose him for the see of Rome after Father Hyginus. This was in the first year of the enthronement of Saint Abba Cladianus, the ninth pope, upon the see of Alexandria.
He persevered in teaching his people and guarding them from pagan opinions, establishing them in the faith in the Lord Christ. News of him reached the ears of the unbelieving king Claudius Caesar, who seized him and beat him with a painful beating. At last he bound a heavy stone to his foot and cast him into the sea on the fifth of Amshir. And when the morrow came, that is, the sixth of Amshir, one of the believers found the body of this saint floating upon the surface of the water with the stone bound to his foot. He took it to his house and shrouded it in costly shrouds. This news spread throughout the city of Rome and all the lands subject to it, until it reached Caesar, who sought the body; but the man hid it and did not bring it forth.
This father has many teachings, some concerning doctrine and the Incarnation, and some homilies for the amendment of conduct, and he also laid down thirty-eight canons.
He is commemorated on the 5th of Amshir
