Samuel Anoints David as King The LORD said to Samuel,“How long do you intend to mourn for Saul? I have rejected him as king over Israel. Fill your horn with olive oil and go! I am sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem, for I have selected a king for myself from among his sons.”

David Spares Saul’s Life Again The Ziphites came to Saul at Gibeah and said,“Isn’t David hiding on the hill of Hakilah near Jeshimon?”

“So now, say this to my servant David:‘This is what the LORD of Heaven’s Armies has said: I took you from the pasture and from your work as a shepherd to make you leader of my people Israel.

So now, O LORD, may the promise you made about your servant and his family become a permanent reality! Do as you promised,

He brought me out into a wide open place; he delivered me because he was pleased with me.

He chose the tribe of Judah, and Mount Zion, which he loves.

They rejoice in your name all day long, and are vindicated by your justice.

He is not enamored with the strength of a horse, nor is he impressed by the warrior’s strong legs.
