All his sons and daughters stood by him to console him, but he refused to be consoled.“No,” he said,“I will go to the grave mourning my son.” So Joseph’s father wept for him.

The messenger replied,“Israel has fled from the Philistines! The army has suffered a great defeat! Your two sons, Hophni and Phineas, are dead! The ark of God has been captured!”

For sadness as intended by God produces a repentance that leads to salvation, leaving no regret, but worldly sadness brings about death.
