When such a person hears the words of this oath he secretly blesses himself and says,“I will have peace though I continue to walk with a stubborn spirit.” This will destroy the watered ground with the parched.
He plans ways to sin while he lies in bed; he is committed to a sinful lifestyle; he does not reject what is evil.
But my people did not obey me; Israel did not submit to me.
A violent person entices his neighbor, and then leads him down a path that is terrible.
Your officials are rebels, they associate with thieves. All of them love bribery, and look for payoffs. They do not take up the cause of the orphan, or defend the rights of the widow.
They are eager to do evil, quick to shed innocent blood. Their thoughts are sinful; they crush and destroy.
But they rebelled and offended his holy Spirit, so he turned into an enemy and fought against them.
“I hate their deeds and thoughts! So I am coming to gather all the nations and ethnic groups; they will come and witness my splendor.
“Oh people of Jerusalem, purify your hearts from evil so that you may yet be delivered. How long will you continue to harbor up wicked schemes within you?
But they did not listen to me or pay any attention to me. They followed the stubborn inclinations of their own wicked hearts. They acted worse and worse instead of better.
He said to me,“Son of man, I am sending you to the house of Israel, to rebellious nations who have rebelled against me; both they and their fathers have revolted against me to this very day.
For out of the heart come evil ideas, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.
O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those who are sent to you! How often I have longed to gather your children together as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you would have none of it!
“You stubborn people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are always resisting the Holy Spirit, like your ancestors did!
But about Israel he says,“All day long I held out my hands to this disobedient and stubborn people!”
But each one is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desires.
