They answered,“Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

And the crowds were saying,“This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee.”

He said to them,“Elijah does indeed come first, and restores all things. And why is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be despised?

And he will go as forerunner before the Lord in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers back to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.”

Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself,“If this man were a prophet, he would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him, that she is a sinner.”

They answered,“John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others that one of the prophets of long ago has risen.”

So they asked John,“Why then are you baptizing if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?”

Differing Opinions About Jesus When they heard these words, some of the crowd began to say,“This really is the Prophet!”

Moses said,‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers. You must obey him in everything he tells you.
