When the Egyptians see you they will say,‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will keep you alive.

Abraham replied,“Because I thought,‘Surely no one fears God in this place. They will kill me because of my wife.’

Aaron said,“Do not let your anger burn hot, my lord; you know these people, that they tend to evil.

He said to her,“If they tie me tightly with brand new ropes that have never been used, I will become weak and be just like any other man.”

He altered his behavior in their presence. Since he was in their power, he pretended to be insane, making marks on the doors of the gate and letting his saliva run down his beard.

Neither man nor woman would David leave alive so as to bring them back to Gath. He was thinking,“This way they can’t tell on us, saying,‘This is what David did.’” Such was his practice the entire time that he lived in the country of the Philistines.

They received divine help in fighting them, and the Hagrites and all their allies were handed over to them. They cried out to God during the battle; he responded to their prayers because they trusted in him.

The LORD says,“Because he is devoted to me, I will deliver him; I will protect him because he is loyal to me.

A song of ascents. Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be moved and will endure forever.

The name of the LORD is like a strong tower; the righteous person runs to it and is set safely on high.

Every word of God is purified; he is like a shield for those who take refuge in him.

Whom are you worried about? Whom do you fear, that you would act so deceitfully and not remember me or think about me? Because I have been silent for so long, you are not afraid of me.

Then the king was delighted and gave an order to haul Daniel up from the den. So Daniel was hauled up out of the den. He had no injury of any kind, because he had trusted in his God.

Then the disciples came to him and said,“Do you know that when the Pharisees heard this saying they were offended?”

“I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body, and after that have nothing more they can do.

(His parents said these things because they were afraid of the Jewish religious leaders. For the Jewish leaders had already agreed that anyone who confessed Jesus to be the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.

From this point on, Pilate tried to release him. But the Jewish leaders shouted out,“If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar! Everyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar!”

At my first defense no one appeared in my support; instead they all deserted me– may they not be held accountable for it.
