Departure of Saint Jacob the Monk
On this day, the monk and ascetic Saint Jacob departed. This father was ascetic from his youth. He dwelt in a cave and stayed there for fifteen years. During that time, he labored with long fasts and frequent prayers. He did not leave his cave during all that time. Some followers of the devil sent a harlot who adorned herself and went to him. She entered the cave and approached him, trying to entice him into sin. But he admonished her and reminded her of the fire of hell and eternal punishments. She repented through him and returned to the city, giving thanks to God who had done her good by turning her from the path of death to life. God performed many miracles through his hands. When he completed his good struggle, he departed in peace.
May his prayers be with us. And to our Lord be glory forever and ever. Amen.
