Glasios the Ascetic

On this day, the departure of the ascetic and struggler Saint Glasios is commemorated. He was born to Christian parents who raised him with a Christian upbringing and taught him the sciences of the Church, then ordained him a deacon. He labored in obedience to Christ and carried his lamp, then went to live as a monk in the wilderness of Shihit. After some time, he was ordained a priest, and an angel of the Lord guided him to a distant place where he gathered a group of monks around him. He was a good example to them and considered himself one of them. He excelled in patience and long-suffering until he was able to copy the Holy Bible and placed it in the church for any monk who wished to read from it. Once, a stranger visited him and stole this book, then offered it for sale. Someone bought it and wanted to know its value, so he took it to Saint Glasios who recognized it as his book. He asked the buyer how much the seller sold it for; he said sixteen dinars. Saint Glasios said it was cheap, so he bought it and returned home with it. When the seller came to collect the money, the buyer said: "I showed it to Father Glasios and he said the price was too high." The seller asked if he said anything else; he said no. The buyer then said: "I do not want to sell it." He took the book and went to Father Glasios, presenting it to him weeping and regretting his action. Saint Glasios did not accept it at first, but after much insistence and many tears, he agreed to take it back. God granted him the grace to perform miracles, including one day when a quantity of fish was gifted to the monastery. After cooking it, the cook placed it in the kitchen and assigned a boy to guard it, but the boy ate a large portion. When the cook found out, he was angry at the boy for eating before mealtime and before the elders blessed it, and struck him a blow that nearly killed him. The cook was terrified and went to Saint Glasios to inform him of what happened. He told him to take the boy and place him in the church before the altar and leave him there. Then the elder and monks came to the church and prayed the evening prayer. After that, the elder left the church, the boy got up and followed him, and no monk knew about this until after the boy's departure. When this father completed his life with a righteous old age, the Lord wished to relieve him from the burdens of this world, so he departed, leaving this good commemoration. May his prayer be with us, and to our Lord be glory forever and ever. Amen.
