The Departure of Joachim the Righteous, Father of the Virgin, Mother of God

On this day, the righteous Joachim (also called Punaqir and Sadok), father of the Lady Virgin, Mother of God in the flesh, departed. He was of the lineage of David from the tribe of Judah, son of Jotham, son of Lazar, son of Eliud, whose genealogy ascends to Solomon, son of David, to whom God promised that his descendants would reign over the children of Israel forever. This righteous man’s wife was barren, but through his persistent asking and seeking from God, He granted them a good and sweet fruit who satisfied all the people of the world and removed from their mouths the bitterness of slavery. Therefore, he was worthy to be called the father of the Lord Christ in regard to the wondrous and strange incarnation. After God granted him the joy of the birth of the Lady, his heart rejoiced, and he offered his sacrifice and was freed from shame. He departed in peace when the Virgin was three years old. May his prayers be with us. Amen.
