The Martyrdom of Saint Abi Fam the Soldier

On this day, the church commemorates the great saint Abi Fam the soldier. This saint was born in the town of Osim (Giza) to a father named Anastasios, who held a high position, and his mother was a saint named Susanna. He distributed his wealth to works of charity and presented himself for martyrdom during the reign of Diocletian before Armanius, the governor of Alexandria. He was greatly tortured, then sent to Arianus, the governor of Antinoopolis (Mallawi), who was severe in his torture. But the angel of the Lord appeared to him and strengthened him. Saint Abi Fam would look up to heaven. Finally, they beheaded him. The faithful took his body and buried it with honor in a sand hill west of Tima (Sohag). He completed his struggle on the 27th of Toba in one of the years of Diocletian's reign in the fourth century. Churches were built in his name in Tima and Osim. May his prayers be with us, and glory be to our Lord forever. Amen.

Consecration of the Church of Saint Laundius the Syrian

On this day, we commemorate the consecration of the Church of Saint Laundius the Syrian. When this saint was martyred in the city of Tripoli on the twenty-second of Abib, a Christian woman, the wife of a high-ranking commander, spent a large sum of money, took his holy body, wrapped it in fine clothes, and placed it in a coffin inside her house. She made an icon of him and hung a lamp before it. It happened that Diocletian became angry with her husband, the commander, and imprisoned him in Antioch. She was saddened and prayed to God, beseeching her saint Laundius to deliver her husband from prison. God accepted her prayer, as Saint Laundius appeared to the commander in prison and said to him: "Do not be sad or depressed, for tomorrow you will be delivered and will eat with the king." He awoke him from his sleep, and the commander was terrified. The saint said to him: "O king, I have come to you to order the release of the commander and to let him go home so that he will not perish." Trembling, he replied, "Whatever you command me, my lord, I will do." The next day, the king summoned the commander from prison, honored him, pleased his heart, ate with him at his table, and informed him of the matter of the knight who appeared to him, then sent him back to his country. When he reached Tripoli, his homeland, and told the news to his wife and family, his wife said to him, "The good that has happened to you is by the blessing of Saint Laundius." Then she revealed to him the body, and he blessed it. When he saw his face, he recognized that it was he who appeared to him in prison. After the death of Diocletian, they built a church in his name, transferred his body there with great celebration, and consecrated it on this day. May his prayer be with us. Amen.
