Martyrdom of Saint Thomas the Sandal Maker

On this day, Saint Thomas from Shandlat (center of El Santa, Gharbia) was martyred. This saint was visited by Michael, the angel of the Lord, when he was twenty-one years old while he was sleeping in the field tending pigs. The angel commanded him to rise and confess the Lord Christ. He went to Alexandria and confessed before the governor, who tortured him with all kinds of torment. With him in the torture were Saint Bebenoudah from Bandara, and Anba Shenouda ("Moses" is mentioned in the manuscript of Shebin El Kom) from Balkim. They encouraged each other to endure. After many tortures, the governor sent him to Ariana, the governor of Ansena, where his head was cut off, and he received the crown of martyrdom. The number of those martyred in his days was seven hundred men and nine women. May their prayers be with us. And to our Lord be glory forever. Amen.

Repose of Saint Hananiah the Apostle, one of the Seventy

On this day, the repose of Saint Hananiah the Apostle occurred. This saint was appointed bishop over Damascus by the apostles and preached there the good news of life. He also preached in the house of Gabriel, and many of its people returned to the faith and were baptized, along with their children. He is the one who baptized the Apostle Paul when the Lord sent him to him. When he baptized him, scales fell from his eyes and he regained sight. God performed many signs through this saint, and many Jews and Gentiles believed his preaching. Afterwards, he was seized by Lucianus the prince and was severely tortured, including having his sides burned with fiery torches. Finally, he was taken out of the city and ordered to be stoned until he surrendered his pure soul to the Lord. May his prayers be with us. Amen.
