The Departure of Anba Yuhannis Al-Sanhouri
On this day, the martyrdom of Saint Yuhannis Al-Sanhouri is commemorated. This saint was born in Sanhout to a father named Maqara and a mother named Hanna. While he was tending his father's sheep, the angel of the Lord appeared to him and showed him a crown of light, saying: 'Why are you sitting here while the struggle is ongoing? Arise, go to Atripe (Banha) and strive in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.' Then the angel gave him peace and departed. He bade farewell to his parents and went to the governor, confessing before him the Lord Jesus Christ. The governor handed him over to a soldier to treat him gently, hoping he would yield to his words. When the soldier took him, the saint performed many signs before him, which caused the soldier also to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and receive the crown of martyrdom by the governor's hand. The governor became angry and tortured the saint with all kinds of torment, but the Lord strengthened and gave him patience. Then he was sent to Ansena, where he was also tortured. Finally, his head was cut off by the sword. Julius Al-Aqfasi took his body, wrapped it, and sent it to his hometown Sanhout. The people received it with praise and chanting and placed it in the church. His body is now in Shubra El-Kheima. May his prayers be with us. Amen.
The Departure of Daniel, the Priest and Martyr
On this day, the departure of the holy father Anba Daniel, priest and martyr, is commemorated. He was a pure and perfect father. When his fame spread, Saint Anastasia came to him disguised as a man and lived in a cave near him for twenty-eight years without anyone knowing about her.
Once he saw a man named Olaji who used to cut stones every day for a gold qirat. He lived on a little of it and fed the poor with the rest, never saving anything. When the saint saw this, he approved of his conduct and prayed to God to give him wealth so he might increase in good works and mercy. God heard him, for Olaji found a treasure while working with the stones and took it to Constantinople. He used his wealth until he became a minister and abandoned good works. When Saint Daniel heard of this, he went to Constantinople, learned of his conduct and how he had abandoned good deeds. Then he saw a vision of the Lord Jesus sitting judging people, as if ordering the crucifixion of Saint Daniel and demanding Olaji's soul. When he awoke, he returned to his monastery and asked God to return Olaji to his former state. The angel of the Lord appeared to him and forbade him from opposing God's judgment on His creation. After this, the king of Constantinople died and another king came who expelled Olaji and took his wealth. Olaji fled to save himself and returned to his country to cut stones as before. Anba Daniel met him and told him what had happened because of him.
This saint endured severe trials for the faith. God showed many signs through him and revealed the time of his departure from this world. He gathered the monks, advised, strengthened, and comforted them, then departed in peace. May his prayers be with us, and to our Lord be glory forever. Amen.
