Pope Primus V

Story

Saint Pope Primus, also called Abriamus or Aprimos, was the fifth Patriarch of Alexandria upon the throne of Saint Mark. He was born in the city of Alexandria, and he was among the first fruits of the preaching of the Gospel in Egypt, for he was baptized by the hand of Saint Mark the Apostle himself.

He was one of the three whom Saint Mark ordained as priests, together with Saint Anianus, who became the Second Patriarch. Thus from his youth he was numbered among the earliest ministers of the Church of Alexandria. He was an ascetic, pure and chaste in his manner of life, and abounding in good works.

He ascended the apostolic throne on the twenty-second day of the Coptic month of Baounah (June 16th of the year 106 A.D.), succeeding Pope Kedron. He shepherded the flock of Christ during the days of the Roman emperors Trajan and Hadrian. Throughout the years of his presidency, the Church enjoyed peace and tranquility, and he guided the faithful in godliness and good works.

After he had completed his course and fulfilled his pastoral service, he departed in peace and reposed in the Lord. He was buried in the Church of Saint Mark in Alexandria, and Saint Justus was raised up as his successor, the Sixth Patriarch.

The Church commemorates his departure on the third day of the Coptic month of Mesra. May his prayers and blessing be with us. Amen.
