History records for us more than one martyr by the name of Amon in different ages, for the name Amon was so renowned among the Copts that we likewise find more than one person bearing this name among the monks of the community, and also in the cenobitic order and among the hermits, a matter that causes confusion among these fathers.
Among the martyrs who bore this name is the list mentioned by Saint Pope Dionysius of Alexandria in the days of the Emperor Decius.
The emperor issued an edict urging the persecution of the Christians. So Amon and his companions went to the pagan judge of Alexandria and openly proclaimed their faith in the Lord Christ. The judge tried to win them over, as was his custom, but they would not waver; so he began to threaten and torture them, and at last he beheaded them
