‹The law and the prophets› [were] ‹until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.›
And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
¶ Now when they heard [this], they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men [and] brethren, what shall we do?
For they that dwell at Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they knew him not, nor yet the voices of the prophets which are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled [them] in condemning [him].
For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.
Then all the Greeks took Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue, and beat [him] before the judgment seat. And Gallio cared for none of those things.
¶ Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence [which I make] now unto you.
But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men [to] edification, and exhortation, and comfort.
