So all the people went to Gilgal, where they established Saul as king in the LORD’s presence. They offered up peace offerings there in the LORD’s presence. Saul and all the Israelites were very happy.

Samuel Anoints David as King The LORD said to Samuel,“How long do you intend to mourn for Saul? I have rejected him as king over Israel. Fill your horn with olive oil and go! I am sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem, for I have selected a king for myself from among his sons.”

So Jesse had him brought in. Now he was ruddy, with attractive eyes and a handsome appearance. The LORD said,“Go and anoint him. This is the one!”

When the two of them had made a covenant before the LORD, David stayed on at Horesh, but Jonathan went to his house.

The men of Judah came and there they anointed David as king over the people of Judah.David was told,“The people of Jabesh Gilead are the ones who buried Saul.”

Jehoiada then drew up a covenant between the LORD and the king and people, stipulating that they should be loyal to the LORD.

David’s Warriors These were the leaders of David’s warriors who, together with all Israel, stood courageously with him in his kingdom by installing him as king, in keeping with the LORD’s message concerning Israel.
