some evil people have departed from among you to entice the inhabitants of their cities, saying,“Let’s go and serve other gods”(whom you have not known before).

They were having a good time, when suddenly some men of the city, some good-for-nothings, surrounded the house and kept beating on the door. They said to the old man who owned the house,“Send out the man who came to visit you so we can take carnal knowledge of him.”

But the sons of Eli were wicked men. They did not acknowledge the LORD’s authority.

But all the evil and worthless men among those who had gone with David said,“Since they didn’t go with us, we won’t give them any of the loot we retrieved! They may take only their wives and children. Let them lead them away and be gone!”

Then David said to Abishai and to all his servants,“My own son, my very own flesh and blood, is trying to take my life. So also now this Benjaminite! Leave him alone so that he can curse, for the LORD has spoken to him.

But evil people are like thorns– all of them are tossed away, for they cannot be held in the hand.

King Rehoboam consulted with the older advisers who had served his father Solomon when he had been alive. He asked them,“How do you advise me to answer these people?”

Rise up, LORD! Confront him! Knock him down! Use your sword to rescue me from the wicked man!

Fear the LORD, my child, as well as the king, and do not associate with rebels,

Like charcoal is to burning coals, and wood to fire, so is a contentious person to kindle strife.
