You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, responding to the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations of those who reject me,

Rather you must destroy their altars, smash their images, and cut down their Asherah poles.

You yourselves must obey my statutes and my regulations and must not do any of these abominations, both the native citizen and the resident foreigner in your midst,

you must drive out all the inhabitants of the land before you. Destroy all their carved images, all their molten images, and demolish their high places.

You must burn the images of their gods, but do not covet the silver and gold that covers them so much that you take it for yourself and thus become ensnared by it; for it is abhorrent to the LORD your God.

After they have been destroyed from your presence, be careful not to be ensnared like they are; do not pursue their gods and say,“How do these nations serve their gods? I will do the same.”

They burned incense on all the high places just like the nations whom the LORD had driven away from before them. Their evil practices made the LORD angry.

Asa’s Religious and Military Accomplishments(14:1) Asa did what the LORD his God desired and approved.

He did evil in the sight of the LORD and committed the same horrible sins practiced by the nations whom the LORD drove out ahead of the Israelites.

In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still young, he began to seek the God of his ancestor David. In his twelfth year he began ridding Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, Asherah poles, idols, and images.

They mixed in with the nations and learned their ways.

Their hearts are slipping; soon they will be punished for their guilt. The LORD will break their altars; he will completely destroy their fertility pillars.
