So Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She named him Reuben, for she said,“The LORD has looked with pity on my oppressed condition. Surely my husband will love me now.”

Then a new king, who did not know about Joseph, came to power over Egypt.

The Call of the Deliverer During that long period of time the king of Egypt died, and the Israelites groaned because of the slave labor. They cried out, and their desperate cry because of their slave labor went up to God.

If you afflict them in any way and they cry to me, I will surely hear their cry,

Jehoahaz asked for the LORD’s mercy and the LORD responded favorably, for he saw that Israel was oppressed by the king of Syria.

“You saw the affliction of our ancestors in Egypt, and you heard their cry at the Red Sea.

The LORD’s words are absolutely reliable. They are as untainted as silver purified in a furnace on the ground, where it is thoroughly refined.

I sought the LORD’s help and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.

Yet he took notice of their distress, when he heard their cry for help.

He satisfies the desire of his loyal followers; he hears their cry for help and delivers them.

For we do not have a high priest incapable of sympathizing with our weaknesses, but one who has been tempted in every way just as we are, yet without sin.
