Then he moved from there to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. There he built an altar to the LORD and worshiped the LORD.

I will give all the land that you see to you and your descendants forever.

So Abram moved his tents and went to live by the oaks of Mamre in Hebron, and he built an altar to the LORD there.

The Sign of the Covenant When Abram was 99 years old, the LORD appeared to him and said,“I am the Sovereign God. Walk before me and be blameless.

I will give the whole land of Canaan– the land where you are now residing– to you and your descendants after you as a permanent possession. I will be their God.”

When they came to the place God had told him about, Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood on it. Next he tied up his son Isaac and placed him on the altar on top of the wood.

Stay in this land. Then I will be with you and will bless you, for I will give all these lands to you and to your descendants, and I will fulfill the solemn promise I made to your father Abraham.

May he give you and your descendants the blessing he gave to Abraham so that you may possess the land God gave to Abraham, the land where you have been living as a temporary resident.”

So Jacob named the place Peniel, explaining,“Certainly I have seen God face to face and have survived.”

He built an altar there and named the place El Bethel because there God had revealed himself to him when he was fleeing from his brother.

Then Joseph said to his brothers,“I am about to die. But God will surely come to you and lead you up from this land to the land he swore on oath to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, where they were living as resident foreigners.

and Moses wrote down all the words of the LORD. Early in the morning he built an altar at the foot of the mountain and arranged twelve standing stones– according to the twelve tribes of Israel.

“To these the land must be divided as an inheritance according to the number of the names.

Look! I have already given the land to you. Go, occupy the territory that I, the LORD, promised to give to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and to their descendants.”

I also call on you to love the LORD your God, to obey him and be loyal to him, for he gives you life and enables you to live continually in the land the LORD promised to give to your ancestors Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”

Covenant Renewal Then Joshua built an altar for the LORD God of Israel on Mount Ebal,

Gideon built an altar for the LORD there, and named it“The LORD is on friendly terms with me.” To this day it is still there in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

Then David built an altar for the LORD there and offered burnt sacrifices and peace offerings. And the LORD accepted prayers for the land, and the plague was removed from Israel.

the promise he made to Abraham, the promise he made by oath to Isaac!

Our God, you drove out the inhabitants of this land before your people Israel and gave it as a permanent possession to the descendants of your friend Abraham.

Then Jeshua the son of Jozadak and his priestly colleagues and Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and his colleagues started to build the altar of the God of Israel so they could offer burnt offerings on it as required by the law of Moses the man of God.

saying,“To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion of your inheritance.”

This means it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God; rather, the children of promise are counted as descendants.

But you, brothers and sisters, are children of the promise like Isaac.
