But Jacob replied,“My son will not go down there with you, for his brother is dead and he alone is left. If an accident happens to him on the journey you have to make, then you will bring down my gray hair in sorrow to the grave.”

You are also commanded to say,‘Do this: Take for yourselves wagons from the land of Egypt for your little ones and for your wives. Bring your father and come.

So now, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your little children.” Then he consoled them and spoke kindly to them.

But I will bring in your little ones, whom you said would become victims of war, and they will enjoy the land that you have despised.

If we go into the city, we’ll die of starvation, and if we stay here we’ll die! So come on, let’s defect to the Syrian camp! If they spare us, we’ll live; if they kill us– well, we were going to die anyway.”

I called for a fast there by the Ahava Canal, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and seek from him a safe journey for us, our children, and all our property.
