The LORD appeared to Abram and said,“To your descendants I will give this land.” So Abram built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.

Then the LORD said to Abram,“Know for certain that your descendants will be strangers in a foreign country. They will be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years.

May he give you and your descendants the blessing he gave to Abraham so that you may possess the land God gave to Abraham, the land where you have been living as a temporary resident.”

I have come down to deliver them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from that land to a land that is both good and spacious, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the region of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites.

“Give these instructions to the Israelites, and tell them:‘When you enter Canaan, the land that has been assigned to you as an inheritance, the land of Canaan with its borders,

You have the right to take what Chemosh your god gives you, but we will take the land of all whom the LORD our God has driven out before us.

They settled down in it and built in it a temple to honor you, saying,

Their descendants entered and possessed the land. You subdued before them the Canaanites who were the inhabitants of the land. You delivered them into their hand, together with their kings and the peoples of the land, to deal with as they pleased.

He drove the nations out from before them; he assigned them their tribal allotments and allowed the tribes of Israel to settle down.

Their enemies oppressed them; they were subject to their authority.
