Martyrdom of Melios the Ascetic
On this day, the saint Melios was martyred. This father was an ascetic and struggler all his days, living with his two disciples in a cave on Mount Khorasan. It happened that the two sons of the king of Khorasan went out hunting wild beasts and set their nets, and this saint fell into them. He was wearing a garment of hair, and when they saw him, they were afraid and asked him, "Are you a human or a jinn?" He answered them, "I am a sinful human living on this mountain to worship the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God." They said to him, "There is no god except the sun and fire; offer sacrifices to them or we will kill you." He replied, "These are creatures of God and works of humans, and you do not know the truth. It is better for you to worship the true God, the Creator of all these." They said to him, "Do you claim that the crucified one by the Jews is God?" He said, "Yes, He who was crucified to destroy sin and death is God." The two became angry with him, seized his two disciples, tortured them, and killed them. They continued torturing the saint for two weeks. Finally, one stood behind him and the other in front to strike him with spears, throwing them from here and there until he peacefully fell asleep. The next day, they chased after a beast and struck it with spears, but each spear returned to their hearts, and they died.
May the prayers of this saint be with us, and glory be to our Lord always. Amen.
