The Departure of Anba George, Companion of Abram

On this day, the saint George, companion of Saint Abram, departed. He was born to Christian saintly parents and tended his father's sheep. His heart inclined toward monasticism, so he left the care of the sheep when he was about fourteen years old and went to the wilderness of Saint Macarius. While on the way, the devil appeared to him disguised as an old man and said, "Your father thought a wild beast had devoured you, so he tore his clothes in grief for you. You ought to return to him first to comfort his heart, then return to the wilderness." The saint was astonished and thought to himself, "The Holy Scripture says, 'Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me'" (Matthew 10:37). When he said this, the devil vanished like smoke. Immediately, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in the form of a monk and guided him to the monastery of Anba Orion. He stayed there under the guidance of a holy monk for ten years, during which he did not taste cooked food, wine, or fruit. Then he desired to be alone in the inner wilderness, so he went to the monastery of the Romans, dedicated to Saints Maximus and Domadius, near the wilderness of Macarius. It happened that Saint Abram came to this monastery at the same time. They went together to the monastery of Saint Macarius and met Saint John, the priest of Shihit. He lodged them in a nearby cell known as the Cell of Bejig, where Anba Abram departed. After him, Anba George departed. His entire life spanned seventy-two years. May their prayers be with us. Amen.

Commemoration of the Feast of Pentecost

On this day, we commemorate the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the pure disciples in the upper room of Zion, where they spoke in all languages. This is called the Feast of Pentecost, and its details are mentioned at the end of the Synaxarium. May the blessing of the Holy Spirit's descent be upon us all. Glory to our Lord forever. Amen.
