The Departure of Saint Simeon the Stylite
On this day in the year 461 A.D., the father Saint Simeon departed. This saint was born in Antioch in the year 392 A.D. to a father named John and a mother named Martha. Many wondrous things happened because of him. Among them, before he was conceived, Saint John the Baptist appeared to his mother in a dream, announcing his birth and telling her what he would become. When he reached the age of sixteen, he inclined his heart toward monasticism. He went to the mountain near Antioch, took on the yoke of monasticism, and entered a life of asceticism and worship. The angel appeared to him in dreams on several nights and guided him to the monastic way of Saint Pachomius. He lived a life surpassing human strength, even isolating himself on a high place of the mountain like a pillar for forty-five years, during which he fed on herbs. This father composed many useful sayings, sermons, and ascetic teachings and explained many chapters from the church books. Then he departed in peace.
May his prayers be with us. And to our Lord be glory forever. Amen.
