ASVs · chapter 4
T hen I returnedH7725 and sawH7200 all the oppressionsH6217 that are doneH6213 under the sun:H8121 and, behold, the tearsH1832 of such as were oppressed,H6231 and they had no comforter;H5162 and on the sideH3027 of their oppressorsH6231 there was power;H3581 but they had no comforter.H5162
Wherefore I praisedH7623 the deadH4191 that have beenH3528 long deadH4191 more than the livingH2416 that are yetH5728 alive;H2416
yea, betterH2896 than them bothH8147 [did I esteem] him that hath not yetH5728 been, who hath not seenH7200 the evilH7451 workH4639 that is doneH6213 under the sun.H8121
Then I sawH7200 all laborH5999 and every skilfulH3788 work,H4639 that for this a manH376 is enviedH7068 of his neighbor.H7453 This also is vanityH1892 and a strivingH7469 after wind.H7307
The foolH3684 foldethH2263 his handsH3027 together,H2263 and eatethH398 his own flesh.H1320
BetterH2896 is a handful,H3709 with quietness,H5183 than twoH2651 handfulsH4393 with laborH5999 and strivingH7469 after wind.H7307
Then I returnedH7725 and sawH7200 vanityH1892 under the sun.H8121
There isH3426 oneH259 that is alone, and he hath not a second;H8145 yea, he hath neither sonH1121 nor brother;H251 yet is there no endH7093 of all his labor,H5999 neither are his eyesH5869 satisfiedH7646 with riches.H6239 For whom then, [saith he], do I labor,H6001 and depriveH2637 my soulH5315 of good?H2896 This also is vanity,H1892 yea, it is a soreH7451 travail.H6045
TwoH8147 are betterH2896 than one,H259 because they haveH3426 a goodH2896 rewardH7939 for their labor.H5999
For if they fall,H5307 the oneH259 will lift upH6965 his fellow;H2270 but woeH337 to him that is aloneH259 when he falleth,H5307 and hath not anotherH8145 to lift him up.H6965
Again,H1571 if twoH8147 lie together,H7901 then they have warmth;H2552 but how can oneH259 be warmH3179 [alone]?
And if a manH259 prevailH8630 against him that is alone, twoH8147 shall withstandH5975 him; and a threefoldH8027 cordH2339 is not quicklyH4120 broken.H5423
BetterH2896 is a poorH4542 and wiseH2450 youthH3206 than an oldH2205 and foolishH3684 king,H4428 who knowethH3045 not how to receive admonitionH2094 any more.
For out of prisonH631 he cameH3318 forth to be king;H4427 yea, even in his kingdomH4438 he was bornH3205 poor.H7326
I sawH7200 all the livingH2416 that walkH1980 under the sun,H8121 that they were with the youth,H3206 the second,H8145 that stood upH5975 in his stead.
There was no endH7093 of all the people,H5971 even of all them over whom he was:H6440 yet they that come afterH314 shall not rejoiceH8055 in him. Surely this also is vanityH1892 and a strivingH7475 after wind.H7307
