¶ Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.
¶ ‹Wherefore, behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and› [some] ‹of them ye shall kill and crucify; and› [some] ‹of them shall ye scourge in your synagogues, and persecute› [them] ‹from city to city:›
‹Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.›
And others, tempting [him], sought of him a sign from heaven.
¶ In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, ‹Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.›
Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
‹Ye are of› [your] ‹father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.›
For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom:
