And the children of the Kenite, Moses' father in law, went up out of the city of palm trees with the children of Judah into the wilderness of Judah, which [lieth] in the south of Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people.
Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
‹Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.›
And they said, Some [say that thou art] John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets.
‹The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men?› And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?
The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
But when Herod heard [thereof], he said, It is John, whom I beheaded: he is risen from the dead.
And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
And when the messengers of John were departed, he began to speak unto the people concerning John, ‹What went ye out into the wilderness for to see? A reed shaken with the wind?›
¶ John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.
Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.
And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
