If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother:

¶ The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.

A good man sheweth favour, and lendeth: he will guide his affairs with discretion.

¶ There is that scattereth, and yet increaseth; and [there is] that withholdeth more than is meet, but [it tendeth] to poverty.

¶ Cast thy bread upon the waters: for thou shalt find it after many days.

[Is] not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

‹For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:›

‹But rather give alms of such things as ye have; and, behold, all things are clean unto you.›

Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.

Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;

But to do good and to communicate forget not: for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.
