I will give the whole land of Canaan– the land where you are now residing– to you and your descendants after you as a permanent possession. I will be their God.”
He answered,‘The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send his angel with you. He will make your journey a success and you will find a wife for my son from among my relatives, from my father’s family.
The LORD appeared to him that night and said,“I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your descendants for the sake of my servant Abraham.”
The Angel of the Presence“I am going to send an angel before you to protect you as you journey and to bring you into the place that I have prepared.
Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel your servants, to whom you swore by yourself and told them,‘I will multiply your descendants like the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken about I will give to your descendants, and they will inherit it forever.’”
‘Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to them, he killed them in the wilderness.’
‘Because they have not followed me wholeheartedly, not one of the men twenty years old and upward who came from Egypt will see the land that I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,
Then the LORD said to him,“This is the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob when I said,‘I will give it to your descendants.’ I have let you see it, but you will not cross over there.”
Confrontation and Repentance at Bokim The LORD’s angel went up from Gilgal to Bokim. He said,“I brought you up from Egypt and led you into the land I had solemnly promised to give to your ancestors. I said,‘I will never break my covenant with you,
I will instruct and teach you about how you should live. I will advise you as I look you in the eye.
You guide me by your wise advice, and then you will lead me to a position of honor.
Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding.
In the days of those kings the God of heaven will raise up an everlasting kingdom that will not be destroyed and a kingdom that will not be left to another people. It will break in pieces and bring about the demise of all these kingdoms. But it will stand forever.
He did not give any of it to him for an inheritance, not even a foot of ground, yet God promised to give it to him as his possession, and to his descendants after him, even though Abraham as yet had no child.
By faith he lived as a foreigner in the promised land as though it were a foreign country, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, who were fellow heirs of the same promise.
