St. Agathus / Acacius

30 Hator · 9 Dec

السيرة

A Cappadocian martyr named Agathus, or Acacius, who was martyred during the reign of the Emperor Diocletian between the years 303 and 305 A.D.

He was a centurion in the army, and together with seventy-seven of his comrades he endured many torments for the sake of his steadfastness in the faith. He was tried before the tribunal of Firmus at Perinthus in Thrace, before an exceedingly cruel judge named Bibienus.

He was led, bound in chains, to Byzantium, where he was publicly scourged and at last beheaded.

Constantinople contained two or three churches in his name, "Saint Acacius," one of which was built in the reign of Constantine the Great. It was called "the Walnut," "the walnut tree," for it is said to have enclosed the walnut tree on which the saint was hung and scourged with whips.

He is commemorated in the Western Church on May 8
