St. Gregory the Monk

السيرة

This saint was born in Upper Egypt. His parents were wealthy and pious; they raised and educated him, and he learned eloquence and medicine, as well as studying the ecclesiastical sciences.

The bishop of the city, Anba Isaac, ordained him a deacon. By nature he was inclined to the monastic life, so he used to visit Saint Pachomius, father of the communal life. At last he joined the monks of the monastery and was discipled under the saint for thirteen years.

When Saint Macarius visited Saint Pachomius, the monk Gregory asked permission of his spiritual father to set out for the Valley of Natroun, where he remained for two years. He then asked permission of Saint Macarius to live in a cave and practice the life of solitude. He stayed there seven years, during which he would visit Saint Macarius twice a year, at the feasts of the Nativity and the Resurrection.

Finally, three days before his repose, an angel made known to him his departure. So he summoned the elders of the desert, bade them farewell, asked them to pray for him, and reposed in peace.

The Church celebrates the feast of his repose on the twenty-fourth of the month of Tut
