St. Ephraim

Story

He was born at Akhmim in Upper Egypt, and became a monk in one of the monasteries of Egypt together with a kinsman of his named Mercurius. They lived as two brothers in the Spirit, supporting one another, practicing the monastic life for a period of twenty years in a spirit of fellowship and love.

When the Arians stirred up persecution against the Church, they entered the sanctuary and sought to offer oblations upon the altar. The two saints came forward and removed the bread and the wine from the altar, saying: "He who has not been baptized in the name of the Holy Trinity has no right to offer his oblation except upon the altar of idols." The Arians seized them and beat them severely until they gave up their spirits. This was on the thirtieth of the month of Abib
