St. Artemius

السيرة

Opinions have differed concerning the person of Artemius. He was a pious man of noble rank who served the Roman Empire faithfully and skillfully in the days of Constantine and his sons after him, and he advanced through the high offices until he attained the rank of "Augustal," a title proper to the one who governed Egypt.

It seems that he had been greatly influenced by the Arians. For this reason, when George the Cappadocian usurped the patriarchate of Alexandria and Saint Pope Athanasius fled, it fell to Artemius to pursue him and search for him in the monasteries and deserts of Egypt; and he persecuted the Orthodox Church in Egypt with great violence.

Some hold that what may be forgiven him is this: when Julian the Apostate ascended the throne and began to persecute the Church of God, inciting the Jews against the Christians and seeking to revive paganism anew, Artemius had by then retired from his office and become an aged man advanced in years. He went to the young emperor and began to counsel him to desist from these deeds. The emperor grew angry with him and handed him over to the soldiers, who mocked and humiliated and scourged him. At last he ordered that his neck be struck. This took place in Antioch on the 20th of October in the year 363 A.D
