St. Apraxius

Story

His life sets before us a vivid image of life in Christ Jesus our Lord, a life that knows neither old age nor weakness nor weariness, as the psalmist says, "so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's" (Psalm 103:5), and as the Apostle Paul says, "And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him" (Colossians 3:10).

He lived in Upper Egypt, in one of the monasteries, practicing a rigorous ascetic life for nearly a year. He strove without weariness in his asceticism and self-denial, enjoying the life of communion in Christ, the giver of strength.

The enemy of good sought to exploit the old age of his body, for he had reached about ninety years of age. So the enemy came to him in disguise and told him that he still had fifty more years left in this world, intending thereby to strike him with a spirit of boredom and despondency so that he would draw back from his struggle. But the saint, with wisdom, replied, "You have grieved me by this, for I had thought I would live another hundred years, and for that reason I had grown slack. If it is so, then I must struggle all the more before I die." Thus he began to redouble his struggle more and more, and he departed that very same year, on the thirteenth of the month of Kiahk
