St. Euprepios

السيرة

The Father Euprepios, also called Eubrebios, was marked by his intense detachment from the things of this life. So much so that when some thieves robbed him, he even helped them carry away his possessions; and when they left his staff behind, he saw it, took it up, and walked after them to give it to them. Fearing him, they handed it to some passers-by so that they might deliver it to them.

Since you know that God is faithful and almighty, let your faith be in Him, that you may share with Him what is His.

We all believe that He is the Almighty and that all things are possible with Him; so lay hold of faith in Him in your own affairs, for He is able to work wonders with you also.

Bodily things are material; whoever loves the world loves occasions for falling. Therefore, if it happens that we lose something, let us receive this with joy and thanksgiving, recognizing that we have been freed from anxiety over what we lost.

A brother asked Abba Euprepios about his way of life, and the elder answered: "Eat straw, wear straw, sleep on straw" -- meaning, despise everything and seek for yourself a heart of iron!

In his early days, Abba Euprepios visited an elder and said to him: "Father, speak a word that I may be saved." He answered: "If you wish to be saved, then when you go to see a person, do not begin to speak before he addresses a word to you." Abba Euprepios felt remorse for what he had uttered, and made a prostration (metanoia) before him, saying: "I have read many books before, yet I never found teaching such as this"; and he departed from him greatly profited.

If a person acquires humility, poverty, and refraining from judging others, the fear of God will dwell within him
