St. Abamon

السيرة

A young man named Abamon (or Bamon), from the people of Bisṭa on the borders of the Ashmunein, longed to offer his life as a sacrifice of love to God. He was seeking out Arianus the governor in order to bear witness to the Lord Jesus Christ before him; and having heard that the governor was moving through the regions of Qusqam, the Ashmunein, and Asyut, he began to ask after him. On the way he met a young man named "Serna" who bore the same purpose.

They began to speak together of the great works of God as they walked, until they reached the village of Misara. There they found the holy prince Eqladius accompanied by six soldiers, and they supposed him to be the governor. When they asked about him, they learned that he had come from Antioch to be martyred, so they rejoiced greatly in him and joined themselves to him. And all of them were praising God as they set off toward Asyut, where Arianus was.

Before Arianus:

In Asyut the two young men saw the governor stand to kiss the hands of Eqladius the prince; but the latter paid this no heed, and instead was bearing witness to his Christ.

The two young men were cast into prison, and then Eqladius the prince was joined to them. In the morning the governor summoned them all and stood disputing with the young man Abamon to make him submit to the worship of the idols. When he refused, the governor ordered him to be tortured with the hanbazin, and to be cast upon an iron bed with a fire kindled beneath it... and the Lord was sustaining him.

Now God used these torments as an occasion for the martyrdom of 142 youths and 28 women and Saint Thecla, as we shall see in the life of the martyr Eqladius. So the governor was compelled to leave Asyut and to carry the confessors away with him.

At last the two saints Abamon and Serna were martyred on the 9th of Baounah
