The Martyr Alexander the Soldier * He was from the city of Rome in the days of the pagan emperor Maximian. When this saint refused to sacrifice to the idols, the emperor punished him by hanging him up by his hands, tying a heavy stone to his feet, and ordering that he be beaten, that his sides be burned, and that lamps of fire be set upon his face. And when these torments did not turn him aside, the emperor commanded that his neck be struck, and so he received the crown of martyrdom. His commemoration is kept on the 1st of Baramhat.
