Johanan was the father of Azariah, who served as a priest in the temple Solomon built in Jerusalem.

He appointed some of the Levites to serve before the ark of the LORD, to offer prayers, songs of thanks, and hymns to the LORD God of Israel.

They and their relatives, all of them skilled and trained to make music to the LORD, numbered two hundred eighty-eight.

The People Contribute to the Temple Hezekiah appointed the divisions of the priests and Levites to do their assigned tasks– to offer burnt sacrifices and present offerings and to serve, give thanks, and offer praise in the gates of the LORD’s sanctuary.

When the builders established the LORD’s temple, the priests, ceremonially attired and with their clarions, and the Levites(the sons of Asaph) with their cymbals, stood to praise the LORD according to the instructions left by King David of Israel.

Mattaniah son of Mica, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, the praise leader who led in thanksgiving and prayer; Bakbukiah, second among his colleagues; and Abda son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun.

They performed the service of their God and the service of purification, along with the singers and gatekeepers, according to the commandment of David and his son Solomon.
