He brought against them the king of the Babylonians, who slaughtered their young men in their temple. He did not spare young men or women, or even the old and aging. God handed everyone over to him.

Terror, pit, and snare are ready to overtake you inhabitants of the earth!

Then I said,“LORD, have you completely rejected the nation of Judah? Do you despise the city of Zion? Why have you struck us with such force that we are beyond recovery? We hope for peace, but nothing good has come of it. We hope for a time of relief from our troubles, but experience terror.

But the next day Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks. When he did, Jeremiah said to him,“The LORD’s name for you is not‘Pashhur’ but‘Terror is Everywhere.’

“What do I see! The soldiers are frightened. They are retreating. They are being scattered. They have fled for refuge without looking back. Terror is all around them,” says the LORD.

Ephraim, as I have seen, has given their children for prey; Ephraim will bear his sons for slaughter.

For this is certain: The days are coming when they will say,‘Blessed are the barren, the wombs that never bore children, and the breasts that never nursed!’
