They said to one another,“Surely we’re being punished because of our brother, because we saw how distressed he was when he cried to us for mercy, but we refused to listen. That is why this distress has come on us!”

Then Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said,“I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you!
Then Saul said to Samuel,“I have sinned, for I have disobeyed what the LORD commanded and your words as well. For I was afraid of the army, and I obeyed their voice.
Samuel said,“Why are you asking me, now that the LORD has turned away from you and has become your enemy?
Because he killed innocent people and stained Jerusalem with their blood, the LORD was unwilling to forgive them.
“I have heard many things like these before. What miserable comforters are you all!
But you should take careful note of this: If you put me to death, you will bring on yourselves and this city and those who live in it the guilt of murdering an innocent man. For the LORD has sent me to speak all this where you can hear it. That is the truth!”
As he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent a message to him:“Have nothing to do with that innocent man; I have suffered greatly as a result of a dream about him today.”
Now when the centurion and those with him who were guarding Jesus saw the earthquake and what took place, they were extremely terrified and said,“Truly this one was God’s Son!”
A third time he said to them,“Why? What wrong has he done? I have found him guilty of no crime deserving death. I will therefore flog him and release him.”
Now when the centurion saw what had happened, he praised God and said,“Certainly this man was innocent!”
Though they found no basis for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him executed.
Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world may be held accountable to God.
They profess to know God but with their deeds they deny him, since they are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good deed.
but by precious blood like that of an unblemished and spotless lamb, namely Christ.
And those who live on the earth will rejoice over them and celebrate, even sending gifts to each other, because these two prophets had tormented those who live on the earth.
