So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the fee for divination in their hand. They came to Balaam and reported to him the words of Balak.

But his sons did not follow his ways. Instead, they made money dishonestly, accepted bribes, and perverted justice.

A wicked person receives a bribe secretly to pervert the ways of justice.

Indeed, they live in the holy city; they trust in the God of Israel, whose name is the LORD of Heaven’s Armies.

“These people have denied what the LORD says. They have said,‘That is not so! No harm will come to us. We will not experience war and famine.

Stop putting your confidence in the false belief that says,“We are safe! The temple of the LORD is here! The temple of the LORD is here! The temple of the LORD is here!”

So I will give their wives to other men and their fields to new owners. For from the least important to the most important of them, all of them are greedy for dishonest gain. Prophets and priests alike, all practice deceit.

They take bribes within you to shed blood. You engage in usury and charge interest; you extort money from your neighbors. You have forgotten me, declares the Sovereign LORD.

The Shameful Sinners Will Be Brought to Shame They consume their alcohol, then engage in cult prostitution; they dearly love their shameful behavior.

They are experts at doing evil; government officials and judges take bribes, prominent men announce what they wish and then they plan it out.

Her prophets are proud; they are deceitful men. Her priests have defiled what is holy; they have broken God’s laws.

“Therefore, I have caused you to be ignored and belittled before all people to the extent to which you are not following after me and are showing partiality in your instruction.”

Now Simon, when he saw that the Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, offered them money,

not a drunkard, not violent, but gentle, not contentious, free from the love of money.

Give a shepherd’s care to God’s flock among you, exercising oversight not merely as a duty but willingly under God’s direction, not for shameful profit but eagerly.

Their eyes, full of adultery, never stop sinning; they entice unstable people. They have trained their hearts for greed, these cursed children!
