The Punishment from God The LORD said to Moses,“How long will this people despise me, and how long will they not believe in me, in spite of the signs that I have done among them?
But Moses said,“Why are you now transgressing the commandment of the LORD? It will not succeed!
The LORD will not abandon his people because he wants to uphold his great reputation. The LORD was pleased to make you his own people.
May the LORD our God be with us, as he was with our ancestors. May he not abandon us or leave us.
Although we are slaves, our God has not abandoned us in our servitude. He has extended kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, in that he has revived us to restore the temple of our God and to raise up its ruins and to give us a protective wall in Judah and Jerusalem.
They did not keep their covenant with God, and they refused to obey his law.
Yet he is compassionate. He forgives sin and does not destroy. He often holds back his anger, and does not stir up his fury.
Certainly O Lord, you are kind and forgiving, and show great faithfulness to all who cry out to you.

They quickly forgot what he had done; they did not wait for his instructions.
Many times he delivered them, but they had a rebellious attitude, and degraded themselves by their sin.

The wicked need to abandon their lifestyle and sinful people their plans. They should return to the LORD, and he will show mercy to them, and to their God, for he will freely forgive them.
Yet my people have forgotten me and offered sacrifices to worthless idols! This makes them stumble along in the way they live and leave the old reliable path of their fathers. They have left them to walk in bypaths, in roads that are not smooth and level.
Tear your hearts, not just your garments!” Return to the LORD your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to anger and boundless in loyal love– often relenting from calamitous punishment.
Do you still not understand? Don’t you remember the five loaves for the five thousand, and how many baskets you took up?
For he says to Moses:“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”
Take care not to refuse the one who is speaking! For if they did not escape when they refused the one who warned them on earth, how much less shall we, if we reject the one who warns from heaven?
