So they put foremen over the Israelites to oppress them with hard labor. As a result they built Pithom and Rameses as store cities for Pharaoh.

The Israelites journeyed from Rameses to Sukkoth. There were about 600,000 men on foot, plus their dependents.

But the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he chased after the Israelites. Now the Israelites were going out defiantly.

Yet do not depart quickly or leave in a panic. For the LORD goes before you; the God of Israel is your rear guard.
