And he sent messengers unto Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the River, to the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt: behold, they cover the [ face of the earth, and they abide over against me.
Behold, the people that is come out of Egypt, it covereth the face of the earth: now, come curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out.
And he took up his parable, and said, Rise up, Balak, and hear; Hearken unto me, thou son of Zippor:
And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor saith, And the man whose eye was closed saith;
And he took up his parable, and said, Alas, who shall live when God doeth this?
And the Philistine said, I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.
Thy servant smote both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
And when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimei, David's brother, slew him.
And Job again took up his parable, and said,
Wherefore should I fear in the days of evil, When iniquity at my heels compasseth me about?
As the sparrow in her wandering, as the swallow in her flying, So the curse that is causeless alighteth not.
Then said I, Ah Lord Jehovah! they say of me, Is he not a speaker of parables?
Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and that ladeth himself with pledges! [
that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world. [
