Samuel Anoints David as King The LORD said to Samuel,“How long do you intend to mourn for Saul? I have rejected him as king over Israel. Fill your horn with olive oil and go! I am sending you to Jesse in Bethlehem, for I have selected a king for myself from among his sons.”
On every mission on which Saul sent him, David achieved success. So Saul appointed him over the men of war. This pleased not only all the army, but also Saul’s servants.
But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he was the one leading them out to battle and back.
The LORD will do for my lord everything that he promised you, and he will make you a leader over Israel.
Wherever I moved among all the Israelites, I did not say to any of their leaders whom I appointed to care for my people Israel,“Why have you not built me a house made from cedar?”’
“Go back and tell Hezekiah, the leader of my people:‘This is what the LORD God of your ancestor David has said:“I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Look, I will heal you. The day after tomorrow you will go up to the LORD’s temple.
Like a shepherd he tends his flock; he gathers up the lambs with his arm; he carries them close to his heart; he leads the ewes along.
I will set one shepherd over them, and he will feed them– namely, my servant David. He will feed them and will be their shepherd.
He will assume his post and shepherd the people by the LORD’s strength, by the sovereign authority of the LORD his God. They will live securely, for at that time he will be honored even in the distant regions of the earth.
The doorkeeper opens the door for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
For it was fitting for him, for whom and through whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through sufferings.
