Later Reuben returned to the cistern to find that Joseph was not in it! He tore his clothes,

And Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, two of those who had investigated the land, tore their garments.

“Get away from this community, so that I can consume them in an instant!” But they threw themselves down with their faces to the ground.

The Israelites went up and wept before the LORD until evening. They asked the LORD,“Should we again march out to fight the Benjaminites, our brothers?” The LORD said,“Attack them!”

So the people came to Bethel and sat there before God until evening, weeping loudly and uncontrollably.

On the third day a man arrived from the camp of Saul with his clothes torn and dirt on his head. When he approached David, the man threw himself to the ground.

Then David prayed to God for the child and fasted. He would even go and spend the night lying on the ground.

Then the king stood up and tore his garments and lay down on the ground. All his servants were standing there with torn garments as well.
