Back to passage

The LORD God formed the man from the soil of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

The thornbush said to the trees,‘If you really want to choose me as your king, then come along, find safety under my branches! Otherwise may fire blaze from the thornbush and consume the cedars of Lebanon!’

He said to them,“The LORD is witness against you, and his chosen king is witness this day, that you have not found any reason to accuse me.” They said,“He is witness!”

He said to his men,“May the LORD keep me far away from doing such a thing to my lord, who is the LORD’s chosen one, by extending my hand against him. After all, he is the LORD’s chosen one.”

But David said to Abishai,“Don’t kill him! Who can extend his hand against the LORD’s chosen one and remain guiltless?”

David replied to him,“How is it that you were not afraid to reach out your hand to destroy the LORD’s anointed?”

But the soldiers replied,“You should not do this! For if we should have to make a rapid retreat, they won’t be too concerned about us. Even if half of us should die, they won’t be too concerned about us. But you are like ten thousand of us! So it is better if you remain in the city for support.”

They captured him and brought him up to the king of Babylon at Riblah in the territory of Hamath and he passed sentence on him there.

But I will throw my net over him, and he will be caught in my snare. I will bring him to Babylon, the land of the Chaldeans(but he will not see it), and there he will die.

The nations heard about him; he was trapped in their pit. They brought him with hooks to the land of Egypt.

Those who lived in its shade, its allies among the nations, also went down with it to Sheol, to those killed by the sword.
